Bloodborne Pathogens
This information applies to all occupational exposures to blood or other potentially infectious materials (OPIMs) as defined by 29 CFR OSHA 1910.1030 (Occupational Health and Safety Administration). The information provided is intended to educate and facilitate safe and compliant work/research/diagnostic activities.
Research and Diagnostic:
- For Research all primary investigators at Cornell University, using human or non-human primate derived materials in their research activities will complete the Memorandum of Understanding and Agreement (MUA) The MUA addresses exposure determination for bloodborne pathogens and laboratory specific methods of research safety and compliance.
- For Diagnostic all personnel using human or non-human primate derived materials in their diagnostic activities will follow their area specific SOP(s)
For non-emergency and non-lab related biological spills please call Cornell Customer Service at 607-255-5322 or submit a Maximo request. There are a lot of factors that can contribute to response time, including but not limited to the day’s happenings and time of day. Customer Service can give the caller an approximate timeframe that a trained cleaner will contact the caller to meet at the spill location. If you need additional clarification on response we can set up a meeting with the building care managers so that you can discuss the process and meet the staff who would be cleaning up minor spills.
Non-Research:
- Applies to all non-research related job tasks with potential exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and other potentially Infectious materials.
- All departments with job classifications and/or tasks that pose a risk of occupational exposure will develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) which address exposure determination and specific methods of compliance with assistance from EHS, as needed.
Procurement of spill clean up supplies, sharps containers, and associated Personal Protective Equipment can be obtained utilizing vendors in e-shops.
