Oxy-acetylene torches have been used for many years for cutting, welding, brazing, and heating of metals. The equipment used today is safe, but every year, hundreds of employees are injured or die as a result of improper use. Knowledge and precautions can prevent fires and violent explosions.

Vacating a Structure or Premises
Introduction
- This Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) will identify the process for safeguarding all vacant buildings and structures through the submission of a Structure/Vacant Premises Application Form and Facility Closure Plan.
- This SOP will also assign specific responsibilities for property owners, Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ), and University Fire Marshal’s Office (UFM).

Open Burning
Scope
The information in this document applies to all open burning and outdoor fires on Cornell University property, including campfires, bonfires, fire bowls, other recreational type fires, and Prescribed Burns (as defined by NYS DEC Regulations Part 194). All University organizations, including departments, colleges, academic units and administrative units must comply with these guidelines.
