Indoor Fireplaces

Fireplaces in Campus Buildings:

  • Not all fireplaces in campus buildings are operable fireplaces.
  • Contact your facility manager to determine if a particular fireplace is able to be used.
  • Operable fireplaces and chimneys must be inspected and certified annually.
  • Operable fireplaces and chimneys must be cleaned on a regular basis.

Using a Fireplace:

  • Fireplaces must be attended when in use and until extinguished.
  • Make sure the chimney damper is fully open before lighting the fire.

Fire Safety Pre-Inspection Tips

Pre-Inspection Walk through Tips

  1. Remove all Extension Cords and replace them with Power Strips with Over Current Protection Breakers.
  2. Extension Cords not being used shall be disconnected from the outlet and properly coiled up.
  3. No Power Strips can be plugged into another Power Strip or Extension Cord.

Fire safety is something most of us do not think enough about.  Whether living on or off-campus means being more responsible for your own safety and the safety of those around you.  Fire safety is one of the most important responsibilities you will assume.  Make sure you know what your responsibilities are regarding safety.

Fire Extinguishers

EHS offers hands on experience with fire extinguishers through our Bullex System.  Feel free to sign up for the "EHS-Fire Extinguisher" (#5300) course through CU Learn to participate in this hands on educational experience.

Evacuation Drills SOP

Purpose and Requirements

This standard operating procedure provides general guidelines for EHS staff who would be required to perform emergency evacuation drills. The purpose is for safety and New York State fire code and New York State Educational Law compliance.

Scope

The standard operating procedure shall apply to the Emergency Services Specialists and other EHS Staff performing this duty. The areas include all of Cornell University Ithaca campus facilities.
