Hazard Class 5: Oxidizers

Definitions

Materials that can start and support a fire through the chemical reaction of oxidation. Organic peroxides are separated out because they provide everything necessary for a fire in one chemical.

Subsets of class 5 are:

• 5.1 Oxidizers means a material that may, generally by yielding oxygen, cause or enhance the combustion of other materials. 
• 5.2 Organic Peroxide means any organic compound containing oxygen (O) in the bivalent -O-O- structure and which may be considered a derivative of hydrogen peroxide, where one or more of the hydrogen atoms have been replaced by organic radicals, unless any of the following applies:
  • Meets definition of explosive
  • Forbidden for transport per 172.101
  • Does not pose a hazard as a 5.2 material

Shipping Options

• Become Trained: All shipments of Class 5 material require the shipper to be trained and certified. EHS certifies all shippers at Cornell. All training whether on-site or by an outside vendor, EHS must review training and issue a certificate of training.
